In the north of the Netherlands, near Slochteren, there are huge natural gas reserves, making the country Western Europeís largest producer. Energy companies operate in oil and gas fields both on land and in the Dutch part of the continental shelf.
The Netherlands also has other natural resources, like salt, clay, gravel and limestone. There used to be coal mines in Limburg, but they have all been closed down now.
